Power Only Trucking: Your Trailer, Our Truck and Driver

What is power only?

Power only trucking means the carrier supplies the truck and a licensed driver, and you supply the trailer. Best Friend Transport is a direct power only carrier: our own trucks and drivers hook up to your trailer and deliver it across the lower 48.

Advantages and limits

A useful tool, not a fix for everything.

Advantages

  • No truck to buy, no driver to hire. Add capacity when you need it, drop it when you don't.
  • Your equipment, your control. You decide how it is loaded, sealed and maintained.
  • Flexible capacity. Seasonal peaks, storm response and one-off inventory moves.
  • Simpler scheduling with drop-and-hook. Less waiting, more moving.
  • One contact with a direct carrier. You talk to the company that pulls the trailer.

Honest limits

  • You need a trailer. No trailer, no power only.
  • The trailer's condition is on you. Bad tires, brakes, lights or plates can delay or cancel a load.
  • Insurance needs to be clear. Liability, cargo and trailer damage are different coverages.
  • Not every trailer fits every truck. Hitch, weight and length decide.
  • Oversize takes longer. Over 8.5 ft (102 in) wide needs permits, sometimes escorts.

Before we hook up

Is your trailer ready to roll?

If something is missing, we tell you before the truck rolls so nobody wastes a trip.

  • Registration & plate
Current, or temporary tags / transit permits for new units.
  • Roadworthy condition
Lights, tires, brakes, breakaway and safety chains.
  • Inspection where it applies
Periodic inspection paperwork for commercial trailers.
  • Insurance
Proof of coverage and agreement on who covers trailer damage.
  • Load within limits
Secured, within rating, evenly distributed, BOL ready.
  • Site access

The full guide

Everything in detail.

What is power only trucking?

Power only trucking is a freight service where the carrier supplies only the truck and a licensed driver, and you supply the trailer. The carrier hooks up to your loaded or empty trailer, hauls it to its destination and drops it. You keep ownership of the equipment; we provide the power.

That is the whole idea. You already have the trailer. Maybe it is the product you are selling, maybe it is a fleet you rent out, maybe it is a loaded trailer that needs to reach a customer. What you don’t have is a truck and a driver free to move it today. A power only carrier fills that gap.

Best Friend Transport runs power only as a direct carrier. The truck is ours, the driver is ours, and one dispatcher handles your load from the first call to the delivery photos. We don’t sell your trailer move to another company. The quote is the price.

How power only works

There are two common ways to run a power only load. Which one fits depends on whether your trailer is ready when the truck arrives.

Drop-and-hook

The trailer is loaded and waiting. Our driver arrives, inspects it with you or your yard staff, hooks up and leaves. At the other end the driver drops the trailer at the agreed spot and leaves without waiting for it to be unloaded.

Drop-and-hook is the fastest, most predictable option. There is no waiting at the dock, so pickup windows are tighter and pricing is simpler. It works best for shippers with a yard or a lot where trailers can sit.

Live load and live unload

The trailer is loaded, or unloaded, while our driver waits. This is common when the trailer has to leave the same day it is loaded, or when the receiver has no room to keep it.

Live loads are fine, but they need clear timing. Long waits at the dock tie up a truck and a driver, so we agree up front on free time and what happens after that: [CONFIRMAR: tiempo libre incluido y cargo por detención].

What happens on every load

  1. Booking. You give us pickup and delivery addresses, trailer type, length, weight, hitch type and your window.
  2. Firm price and truck assignment. We match the right truck to your trailer and confirm the price before dispatch.
  3. Pre-trip inspection. The driver checks the hitch or kingpin, safety chains, breakaway cable, lights, tires, brakes and registration, and photographs the trailer before moving it.
  4. Transit with updates. Your dispatcher keeps you posted. If the trailer has a problem on the road, you hear it from us first.
  5. Delivery and photos. The driver drops the trailer, gets a signature on the paperwork and sends delivery photos.

Who uses power only

Power only fits any business where the trailer, not the cargo, is the thing that needs to move.

  • RV dealers. Bringing new units in from the factory, swapping inventory between lots or delivering a sold unit to a buyer in another state. If you are moving one RV for a private owner, our full-service RV transport is usually a better fit.
  • Trailer and RV manufacturers. Factory-to-dealer delivery of travel trailers, fifth wheels, cargo trailers and utility trailers. See how our drivers handle fifth wheel transport for a sense of the hitching and inspection routine.
  • Rental companies. Equipment, cargo and specialty trailer fleets that need repositioning between branches or a surge of trucks for peak season.
  • Portable restroom fleets. Restroom and shower trailers moving between events, job sites and emergency staging areas. When the job includes standalone units, generators or a full deployment, see our portable restroom and disaster relief transport service.
  • Businesses with trailers and no spare drivers. If your own drivers are booked solid, power only adds capacity without hiring or buying another truck.

Advantages and limits

Power only is a useful tool, not a fix for everything. Here is the honest version.

Advantages

  • No truck to buy, no driver to hire. You add hauling capacity when you need it and drop it when you don’t.
  • Your equipment, your control. The trailer stays yours. You decide how it is loaded, sealed and maintained.
  • Flexible capacity. Seasonal peaks, storm response and one-off inventory moves are easier to cover.
  • Simpler scheduling with drop-and-hook. When trailers are ready, trucks spend less time waiting and more time moving.
  • One contact with a direct carrier. You talk to the company that actually pulls the trailer, not a middleman passing messages along.

Limits

  • You need a trailer. If you don’t own or lease one, power only doesn’t apply. You need a carrier that brings its own equipment.
  • The trailer’s condition is on you. Flat tires, bad brakes, dead lights or expired plates can delay or cancel a load. A roadside breakdown caused by the trailer costs time and money.
  • Insurance needs to be clear. Liability, cargo and damage to the trailer itself are different coverages. Sort them out before the first load, not after a claim.
  • Not every trailer fits every truck. Hitch type, weight and length decide which truck can pull it. Some loads need equipment we may not run.
  • Oversize trailers take longer. Anything wider than 8.5 feet (102 inches) needs state permits and sometimes escorts.
  • For one private RV move, full service is usually simpler. Power only is designed for businesses with trailers ready to go.

Trailer types we can move

What we can pull depends on the truck assigned and the trailer’s hitch, weight and length. Here is how we sort requests today:

Trailer type Hitch Can we pull it?
Travel trailers and toy haulers Ball / bumper pull [CONFIRMAR: sí/no y límites de peso y largo]
Fifth wheels Fifth wheel / kingpin [CONFIRMAR: sí/no y límites de peso y largo]
Restroom and shower trailers Ball or gooseneck [CONFIRMAR: sí/no y límites]

Equipment and flatbed trailers Gooseneck or pintle [CONFIRMAR: sí/no y límites]
Boat trailers (loaded) Ball [CONFIRMAR: sí/no y límites]
53-ft dry vans, reefers, semi flatbeds Kingpin (semi tractor) [CONFIRMAR: si se cuenta con tractor]

Our trucks: [CONFIRMAR: equipo — hotshot/gooseneck/dually/tractor, capacidad de arrastre]. If your trailer isn’t on this list, send us the specs and we will tell you straight away whether we can move it.

Requirements before we hook up

A power only load goes smoothly when the trailer is ready to roll. Before pickup, make sure of the following:

  • Registration and plate. Current registration and a valid plate, or the temporary tags or transit permits required for new units leaving a factory or dealer.
  • Roadworthy condition. Working lights and turn signals, tires with safe tread and correct pressure, working brakes and a breakaway system where required, safety chains in good shape.
  • Inspection where it applies. Trailers used in commercial service may need a current periodic inspection. Have the paperwork handy.
  • Insurance. Proof of coverage on the trailer, and an agreement on who covers what if the trailer is damaged.
  • Load within limits. Cargo secured, weight within the trailer’s rating and evenly distributed, and a bill of lading or delivery paperwork ready.
  • Site access. Clear instructions for the pickup and delivery locations: gate hours, contacts, where to drop the trailer.

If something is missing, we tell you before the truck rolls so nobody wastes a trip.

Frequently asked questions

Still wondering? Call (954) 899-9436— a dispatcher picks up.

What is the difference between power only and regular freight shipping?

In regular freight shipping the carrier brings its own trailer and you pay to move your cargo. With power only trucking you already have the trailer, loaded or empty, and you pay only for the truck and driver to pull it. Power only makes sense when the trailer itself is the product, or when you own trailers but don't have enough trucks or drivers.

Who owns the trailer during a power only move?

You do. Ownership never changes hands. We take possession only for the trip, we inspect it with you at pickup, and we hand it back at delivery with photos. That is why the trailer has to be registered, plated and roadworthy before we hook up: the trailer's condition is your responsibility, and the driving is ours.

Who pays if the trailer is damaged in transit?

It depends on the cause and on each party's insurance, so settle it before the first load. Our FMCSA-required liability coverage applies to how we drive. Damage to your trailer is usually handled through trailer interchange coverage or your own physical damage policy. Our current coverage for trailers we pull: [CONFIRMAR: seguro trailer interchange / daño físico y montos]. Ask for our certificate of insurance.

How is power only priced?

Mostly by distance, the type and weight of the trailer, the equipment needed to pull it, and how flexible the pickup window is. Drop-and-hook loads are easier to schedule than live loads, and waiting time at the dock can add detention. On real power only moves we hauled between February 2025 and October 2026 (empty trailers, restroom trailers, generators and similar, not counting RVs), the median was $2.55 per mile and $1,200 per move, and half of all moves fell between $2.00 and $3.97 per mile. That is not a quote; detention terms come in writing with your firm price before dispatch.

Can you move new RVs from a manufacturer to a dealer?

Yes, that is one of the most common power only jobs we see: new travel trailers and fifth wheels leaving the factory lot for a dealership. We hook up at the manufacturer, run a pre-trip inspection, deliver to the dealer lot and hand off the paperwork. Recurring factory-to-dealer runs can be set up as a program with the same dispatcher.

Do you haul hazardous materials or oversize trailers under power only?

Hazardous materials: [CONFIRMAR: si se aceptan cargas hazmat]. Trailers wider than 8.5 feet (102 inches) need state oversize permits and sometimes escort vehicles, which adds lead time and cost. We tell you on the first call whether we can handle the load, and if we can't, we say so instead of brokering it to someone else.

How far in advance should I book power only?

For planned moves, a few days of notice gives us room to match the right truck and plan the route. For urgent loads, call dispatch 24/7 and we will tell you honestly whether we can make your window. Typical lead time for a standard booking: [CONFIRMAR: anticipación típica para reservar].
